Overview
A group of bacterial diseases causing rapid, mushy decay of fleshy plant tissues. Particularly damaging to stored vegetables, bulbs, and succulent plant parts.
Symptoms
Water-soaked, mushy, foul-smelling decay of fleshy tissues. Affected areas become slimy and collapse. Internal tissues liquefy. Strong, putrid odor. Rapid spread in warm, humid conditions.

Prevention
Avoid wounding plants during harvest and handling. Cure root crops before storage. Store at proper temperatures. Ensure good drainage. Avoid overhead irrigation on susceptible crops.
Management
Remove infected plants immediately. Improve drainage and air circulation. Reduce irrigation. Store harvested crops at proper temperatures. Copper sprays have limited effectiveness.
