Cucumber Mosaic Virus
Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), Cucumovirus
Overview
One of the most widespread plant viruses, affecting over 1,200 plant species including vegetables, ornamentals, and weeds. Transmitted by over 80 species of aphids in a non-persistent manner.
Symptoms
Mosaic patterns of yellow and green on leaves. Leaf distortion, curling, and reduced size. Stunted growth. Fruit may be misshapen with bumpy surfaces. Flower color breaking in ornamentals.
Environmental Conditions
Variable
Prevention
Control aphid vectors. Use reflective mulches. Plant resistant varieties. Remove weed hosts. Use virus-free seed and transplants. Row covers during early growth.
Management
No cure. Remove infected plants. Control aphids (though non-persistent transmission makes this difficult). Mineral oil sprays may reduce transmission. Remove weed reservoirs.
