Beet curly top virus (BCTV), Curtovirus
Overview
A viral disease transmitted by the beet leafhopper, affecting a wide range of crops including tomatoes, peppers, beans, beets, and many ornamentals. Particularly problematic in arid western regions.
Symptoms
Upward rolling and curling of leaves. Yellowing and thickening of leaves. Stunted, bushy growth. Purple discoloration of veins. Fruit set is dramatically reduced. Plants may die rapidly.

Prevention
Use row covers to exclude leafhoppers. Plant resistant varieties. Provide shade (leafhoppers prefer sunny, open areas). Remove weed hosts. Plant dense stands.
Management
No cure. Remove infected plants. Control leafhoppers. Shade cloth can reduce leafhopper activity. Intercrop with tall plants for shade. Replant with resistant varieties.
