Rose Rosette Disease
Rose rosette emaravirus (RRV)
Overview
A devastating viral disease of roses spread by the eriophyid mite Phyllocoptes fructiphilus. Causes bizarre proliferation of thorns, witches' brooms, and distorted red growth. Fatal to infected plants.
Symptoms
Rapid elongation of shoots with excessive red coloration. Proliferation of thorns (hyperthorny growth). Witches' broom clusters of distorted shoots. Deformed flowers. Progressive decline and death within 2-5 years.
Environmental Conditions
Variable
Prevention
Control eriophyid mites with miticides. Space roses for air circulation. Remove nearby multiflora roses (reservoir host). Inspect new plants carefully. Avoid planting roses near wild populations.
Management
No cure. Remove and destroy infected plants immediately (bag before removing to prevent mite spread). Treat surrounding roses with miticides. Replace with resistant species or non-rose alternatives.
