Sooty Mold
Capnodium spp., Fumago spp., Scorias spp.
Overview
A group of fungi that grow on honeydew secreted by sap-sucking insects such as aphids, whiteflies, and scale insects. The black, sooty coating blocks light and reduces photosynthesis.
Symptoms
Black, sooty coating on leaf surfaces, stems, and fruit. The mold grows on honeydew deposits from insects, not on plant tissue directly. Reduced photosynthesis and vigor. Cosmetically unappealing fruit.
Environmental Conditions
Humid
Prevention
Control sap-sucking insects (aphids, whiteflies, scale, mealybugs) that produce honeydew. Encourage beneficial insects. Maintain plant vigor.
Management
Control the underlying insect infestation first. Wash mold off with strong water spray or soapy water. Neem oil addresses both insects and mold. Horticultural oil smothers insects and loosens mold.
