Sunscald
Sun exposure (physiological injury, not pathogenic)
Overview
A physiological injury caused by intense sun exposure on fruit or bark, particularly when plants are suddenly exposed to direct sunlight after a period of shade or when bark is exposed in winter.
Symptoms
On fruit: white, tan, or papery patches on sun-exposed sides. On tree bark: elongated, sunken, discolored areas on south/southwest-facing trunk sides, often cracking and peeling. Secondary infections may follow.
Environmental Conditions
Hot
Prevention
Maintain adequate foliage cover on fruit. Paint tree trunks with white latex paint or tree wrap for winter protection. Avoid heavy pruning that exposes fruit or bark. Harden off transplants gradually.
Management
Protect exposed bark with white latex paint or tree guards. Provide temporary shade for newly exposed fruit. Maintain plant vigor for foliage regrowth. Treat secondary infections on damaged bark.
