Verticillium Stripe
Verticillium longisporum
Fungus
Stems
Whole Plant
Overview
An emerging fungal disease of canola and other brassica oilseed crops causing dark striping on stems, premature ripening, and yield loss.
Symptoms
Dark, vertical striping on stems. Premature ripening and senescence. Cross-section of stems shows gray-brown discoloration. Microsclerotia visible on stems late in season. Yield reduction.
Environmental Conditions
Variable
Prevention
Rotate canola on a 4+ year cycle. Plant resistant varieties. Manage crop residues. Avoid fields with history of the disease.
Management
No effective fungicide treatment. Crop rotation. Resistant varieties. Manage residues to reduce inoculum. Biological seed treatments show some promise.
