Millennium is a modern all-male hybrid asparagus developed at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, and has rapidly become one of the top-performing varieties in North America. Bred for cold-climate resilience, it is exceptionally hardy and productive in northern gardens, tolerating heavy and clay soils better than the Jersey series. Being nearly all male, it directs energy into spear production for very high yields and does not produce weedy volunteer seedlings. Spears are medium to large, uniform, and deep green with tight tips, and crowns are notably long-lived, often remaining productive for 15 to 20 years. Millennium has strong tolerance to fusarium and rust. It excels in USDA zones 3 to 8 and is widely recommended as a top choice for cold-region and heavier-soil sites.
