Bluegold is a mid to late-season northern highbush blueberry released by the USDA in 1989. It is known for its outstanding cold hardiness and heavy, reliable production of firm, light blue, medium-sized berries with a sweet, aromatic flavor. The bushes are somewhat lower and more spreading than many highbush types, which can make them easier to net and harvest. Bluegold sets fruit so heavily that thinning or careful pruning is often needed to maintain berry size. Very winter hardy and productive, it is a strong choice for northern gardens and is often grown alongside Bluecrop and other midseason varieties for a dependable, flavorful crop.
