Ma'afala

    Breadfruit(Artocarpus altilis)

A traditional staple cultivar from Samoa and Tonga (collected at the Nafanua Agriculture Station on Upolu Island) that is now distributed globally via tissue culture and is one of the most widely planted commercial breadfruit varieties. It is smaller and less dense than the Hawaiian type and notable for its relatively high protein content.

    Flavor Profile

Mild, starchy staple flavor; lighter and softer than Hawaiian 'ulu, well suited to mashes, patties and blended dishes.

    Visual Characteristics

Oval, somewhat irregular fruit averaging about 789 g (14 cm long by 11 cm wide) with a sandpapery skin and creamy light-yellow flesh; a few seeds present. Leaves average about 36 x 30 cm with roughly 8 lateral lobes.

    Growing Tips

Widely propagated by tissue culture; a compact, comparatively small-statured tree that adapts well to a range of Pacific and tropical growing conditions, making it a popular choice for global distribution and smaller orchards.
