Otea

    Breadfruit(Artocarpus altilis)

A vigorous Tahitian (French Polynesian) cultivar documented by the NTBG Breadfruit Institute and distributed via Global Breadfruit for its nutritional value and suitability for mass micropropagation and global distribution. It is a productive, seedless variety that can yield 200 or more fruit per year, with commercial potential for chips and processed products.

    Flavor Profile

Taste and texture similar to Hawaiian 'ulu; flesh is firm yet tender when cooked, good for chips, roasting and general cooking.

    Visual Characteristics

Round to oval, firm, always-seedless fruit averaging about 1.84 kg (4.1 lb; roughly 15 x 15 cm, ~6 x 6 in) with solid, dense, pale-to-creamy yellow flesh.

    Growing Tips

Fast-growing tree with a growth habit like the Hawaiian 'ulu; micropropagated trees can begin bearing in about 2.5-3 years and fruit prolifically. Main fruiting season runs roughly July through February with occasional off-season fruit; reported to tolerate somewhat saltier soils than other varieties. Well suited to commercial planting.
