    Breadfruit(Artocarpus altilis)

    The original seedless Polynesian-introduced breadfruit variety that spread throughout the Hawaiian Islands and remains the standard Hawaiian type (ulu maoli). It is prized for a dense, firm, starchy texture and is the most prevalent traditional variety in Hawai'i.

    Flavor Profile

    Starchy and mildly sweet; dense and firm, excellent for fries, chips, gratin and traditional roasting (kalua).

    Visual Characteristics

    Round to oblong seedless fruit averaging roughly 3.5 lb (~1.6 kg) with dense, firm flesh; edible portion approximately 60-80% depending on how much of the core is removed.

    Growing Tips

    A large, long-lived tree traditionally propagated from root suckers or shoots; performs well in Hawaii lowland tropical conditions and is the backbone variety of Hawaiian breadfruit orchards.
