Heirloom

    Charleston Wakefield

    Cabbage(Brassica oleracea)

    80 days to maturity
    High yield

Charleston Wakefield is a heirloom pointed cabbage developed as a larger, slightly later selection of Early Jersey Wakefield and introduced in the 1890s. It shares the conical, pointed head shape of its parent but produces bigger heads, typically four to six pounds, on a robust plant. Maturing a couple of weeks later than Early Jersey Wakefield, it offers a longer harvest window and greater yield while keeping the sweet, tender quality of the Wakefield type. The dense pointed heads resist splitting and are well suited to fresh use and slaw. Charleston Wakefield is a good choice for gardeners who like the pointed heirloom form but want larger heads and a productive main-season crop.

    Flavor Profile

Sweet and tender like its Jersey parent, with mild, crisp leaves good for fresh eating and slaw.

    Visual Characteristics

Large conical, pointed green heads on a vigorous plant, bigger than Early Jersey Wakefield.

    Growing Tips

Expect heads a couple of weeks later and larger than Early Jersey Wakefield; give slightly wider spacing.
