Catuai

    Coffee(Coffee)

A compact Coffea arabica cultivar bred by the Instituto Agronomico (IAC) in Brazil, from a cross of Caturra and the highly productive Mundo Novo (breeding begun 1949, released 1972); its name comes from a Guarani word meaning very good. It is available in both red-fruited and yellow-fruited types.

    Flavor Profile

Good but not exceptional cup quality; good quality potential at high altitude.

    Visual Characteristics

Dwarf/compact plant (less compact than Caturra) with average-sized beans and red or yellow cherries.

    Growing Tips

Requires high nutrition input; first production in year 3. Its compactness allows dense planting (recommended 5,000-6,000 plants/ha with single-stem pruning).

    Resistance Information

    Disease Resistance

Poor; highly susceptible to coffee leaf rust and susceptible to coffee berry disease and nematodes.
