Axminster Gold
Comfrey(Symphytum officinale)
A striking golden-variegated Russian comfrey grown as an ornamental foliage perennial. A sterile hybrid selection valued for its boldly margined leaves rather than for fodder or fertilizer use.
Visual Characteristics
Rough, hairy gray-green basal leaves edged with a broad golden-yellow margin; forms an upright clump to about 0.5-0.6 m (18-24 in) with flower stems reaching 1.2-1.5 m (4-5 ft), bearing pendant clusters of bell-shaped flowers that open pinkish and mature to mauve-purple in mid-spring to early summer.
Growing Tips
Grow in moderately fertile, moist, well-drained soil in sun to partial shade; some afternoon shade in hot climates gives the best variegation. Cut back after flowering to encourage fresh variegated growth and possible rebloom. Propagate by division or root cuttings; can still spread vigorously once established.
Resistance Information
Disease Resistance
A sterile hybrid that produces no viable seed, so it does not self-sow; variegated forms are generally noted as less prone to becoming a nuisance than green-leaved types, though it still spreads by creeping roots.
