Comfrey Variegatum

    Comfrey(Symphytum officinale)

A long-cultivated variegated form of Russian comfrey grown chiefly for its ornamental cream-margined foliage. A sterile hybrid, it forms a large architectural clump prized in mixed borders and shade gardens.

    Visual Characteristics

Clump-forming perennial to about 90 cm (3 ft) tall of bristly grey-green leaves roughly 15-25 cm (6-10 in) long, each edged with a broad creamy-white to cream border; small tubular pale lilac-pink flowers appear in drooping terminal clusters from late spring into summer.

    Growing Tips

Best in moderately fertile, moist soil in full sun to partial shade; some afternoon shade helps prevent leaf scorch on the pale margins. Propagate by division of the fleshy roots in spring. Remove any all-green reverting shoots to maintain variegation.

    Resistance Information

    Disease Resistance

Sterile hybrid setting no viable seed; variegated forms are noted as having less potential to become a nuisance than the plain green-leaved forms.
