    Scarlet Runner

    Common Bean(Phaseolus vulgaris)

    70 days to maturity
    Climbing

Scarlet Runner is a vigorous climbing bean grown both as an ornamental and an edible, famous for its brilliant scarlet-red flowers that attract hummingbirds and pollinators. Though botanically the runner bean Phaseolus coccineus rather than the common bean, it is widely sold and grown alongside common beans in vegetable gardens. The tall vines climb 8 to 12 feet and produce long, rough-textured green pods that are edible and tasty when young, while the large, showy purple-and-black mottled seeds can be shelled fresh or dried. Beloved in cottage and heirloom gardens, it doubles as a fast screen or arbor cover. It prefers cooler summers and consistent moisture. Scarlet Runner is open-pollinated and easy to save, prized for both its beauty and its dual food value.
