Armenian cucumber is a heirloom that is botanically a melon, Cucumis melo, but grown and eaten as a cucumber, long cultivated in the Middle East and popularized in Armenia and Turkey. Also called snake melon or yard-long cucumber, it produces very long, slender, ribbed fruits that can reach two to three feet, with pale green thin skin that needs no peeling. The flesh is crisp, sweet, mild, and completely non-bitter, and because it is a melon it is seedless in texture when young and very easy to digest. Vigorous heat-loving vines produce heavily in warm climates. Maturing in about 60 to 70 days, it is best harvested at twelve to eighteen inches for the best texture. It is prized for its mild flavor, unusual length, and burpless quality.
