National Pickling is a well-known open-pollinated pickling cucumber developed by the National Pickle Packers Association and introduced in 1929 to provide a superior cucumber for commercial and home pickling. It produces blocky, medium-green fruits with rounded ends and a good length-to-diameter ratio, excellent both as small gherkins and as larger dill-sized pickles, and also usable for slicing when young. The vigorous vines are productive and the fruits are crisp and hold up well in processing. Maturing in about 52 to 60 days, it is an early and dependable variety. As an open-pollinated cucumber it allows seed saving. National Pickling has remained a trusted choice for gardeners who preserve their harvest, offering versatile fruit sizes and reliable yields for a range of pickle types.
