York is a widely planted American elderberry cultivar developed by the New York Agricultural Experiment Station, known for producing the largest berries of the common named varieties. It is a robust, productive shrub that ripens somewhat later in the season, and its exceptional fruit size and heavy yields make it a favorite for both home growers and commercial elderberry plantings. York pairs especially well with Adams for cross-pollination, and the two are often recommended together. The large clusters of dark berries are excellent for wine, syrup, jelly, and pies. Slightly more compact than some vigorous types, York combines big fruit, good production, and cold hardiness, making it one of the most recommended elderberry cultivars for temperate gardens.
