Flame Seedless is a red seedless table grape developed by the USDA breeding program at Fresno, California, and released in 1973. It is a complex hybrid involving Thompson Seedless, Cardinal, and several other Vitis vinifera selections. Extremely popular in supermarkets, it ripens early to mid season and is prized for its crunchy texture and vivid color. The vigorous, productive vine sets medium-large round berries in large clusters. Flame Seedless colors well in warm climates and stores and ships well, making it a commercial mainstay in California and other Mediterranean-climate regions. Home growers value it as one of the earliest quality red seedless grapes, though it needs heat and good sun exposure to develop full red color and sweetness.
