Imperial Gem is a highly regarded English lavender similar to Hidcote but often considered even more vigorous and uniform, with exceptionally deep purple flowers and silvery foliage. Growing to about eighteen to twenty-four inches, it forms a dense, well-shaped mound topped by long spikes of rich dark-purple blooms that hold their intense color when dried. This makes Imperial Gem a favorite for lavender bunches, sachets, and low hedging where strong flower color and good fragrance are wanted. Hardy, drought tolerant, and very attractive to bees, it thrives in full sun and free-draining soil. Its combination of vigorous, tidy growth and some of the deepest purple flowers of any English lavender makes it a top ornamental and craft cultivar for permaculture gardens.
