Munstead is a classic, early-blooming English lavender named after Munstead Wood, the garden of the celebrated designer Gertrude Jekyll. It is compact and hardy, growing to about twelve to eighteen inches, with fragrant lavender-blue flowers that appear earlier than most cultivars, giving a long season when combined with later types. Munstead is exceptionally reliable, cold-tolerant, and easy to grow, which has made it one of the most widely planted lavenders for edging, low hedges, herb gardens, and pollinator borders. Its sweet fragrance and good bud retention make it useful for culinary blends, sachets, and dried bunches. Undemanding and dependable in full sun and well-drained soil, Munstead remains a staple English lavender for permaculture and cottage gardens alike.
