Rubra
Malabar spinach(Basella alba)
The red-stemmed ornamental-edible form of Basella alba, sold as 'Red Malabar' and listed under the taxonomic synonym Basella rubra. It is the most established named form of the species, valued both as a warm-season leafy green and as an ornamental climber.
Flavor Profile
Mild, mucilaginous flesh often compared to Swiss chard rather than true spinach; tender young leaves and stems are used raw in salads or cooked in stir-fries.
Visual Characteristics
Deep red to reddish-purple stems with glossy, thick, savoyed dark green leaves; older leaves develop purple pigment starting at the leaf base, and leaf veins show a pink to reddish tint. A red dye can be obtained from the fruit juice.
Growing Tips
Heat-loving vigorous climbing vine that needs a trellis; prefers slightly acidic, moist, fertile soil but tolerates poorer soils. Direct sow after frost danger passes or start indoors 5-6 weeks before transplant; harvest baby leaves around 50 days or full-size leaves around 85 days.
