Kalamata
Olive(Olea Europea)
A large-fruited Greek cultivar from the Kalamata region of the Peloponnese, world-renowned as a premium black table olive and carrying EU protected designation of origin status.
Flavor Profile
Rich, smooth, meaty and fruity table olive with a distinctive sought-after flavor; low oil content (around 6%) makes it a table rather than oil olive, though it yields a high-polyphenol oil.
Visual Characteristics
Large, dark purple, almond-shaped plump fruit; the tree is distinctive for large leaves that grow to about twice the size of other olive varieties.
Growing Tips
Cannot be harvested green and must be hand-picked when fully ripe to avoid bruising; needs a warm, frost-free climate and is usually cured in wine vinegar or brine.
Resistance Information
Disease Resistance
Resistant to olive knot and olive fruit fly but intolerant of cold and susceptible to verticillium wilt and peacock spot.
