Hot & Spicy

    oregano(Origanum vulgare)

A selected culinary clone of Greek oregano (Origanum vulgare subsp. hirtum) chosen for its unusually intense pungency and subtle heat. Popular for Spanish and Mexican cooking. Best propagated by division to preserve its characteristics.

    Flavor Profile

Exceptionally pungent and hot with a distinctive spicy kick, hotter than standard Greek oregano; excellent in Spanish black-bean, vegetable, and meat dishes. Best added near the end of cooking as flavor fades with heat.

    Visual Characteristics

Furry, generally grayer-green foliage; larger than typical Greek oregano, reaching up to 2-3 ft (60-90 cm) tall and wide when left unharvested, with small white summer flowers. Stays 6-12 in with frequent harvest.

    Growing Tips

Full sun to partial shade (6+ hours), well-drained soil, and minimal water/fertilizer; dislikes overly moist conditions. Excellent in containers. Propagate by division rather than seed to keep the intended pungency.
