Rhizoma peanut(Arachis glabrata)
A low-growing 'ground cover' type rhizoma peanut germplasm (Reg. No. GP-129, PI 658529) released by the University of Florida in 2008 for dual ornamental and forage use. Collected along the Brazil-Paraguay border, it has gained wide acceptance in the commercial landscape industry as an ornamental groundcover.
Visual Characteristics
Low, dense mat-forming habit that flowers profusely through the growing season; yellow-green leaves (RHS 144A) with yellow-orange, pea-like flowers. Among cultivars it is the shortest but has high herbage bulk density and is a prolific producer of roots and rhizomes.
Growing Tips
Prized as a low-maintenance, drought-tolerant ornamental groundcover; tolerates some shade (shade affects height but not overall cover). Established vegetatively from rhizomes.
