Latitude 34

    Rhizoma peanut(Arachis glabrata)

A cold-hardy rhizoma peanut cultivar (Reg. No. CV-109, PI 658497) selected by Texas AgriLife Research and released in 2009 from a 1959 Paraguay collection (genotype GKP 9572, near Trinidad, Paraguay). Bred as a freeze-tolerant perennial legume forage for cool, dry climates and cattle, horse, small-ruminant, and wildlife use.

    Visual Characteristics

Upright growth habit; a spreading rhizomatous legume with yellow-orange flowers, adapted to form persistent stands farther north than Florida-bred cultivars.

    Growing Tips

Adapted to cool, dry climates up to about 34 degrees N latitude and tolerant of low rainfall; the top performer for overwintering in north-central Texas and Oklahoma trials. Established vegetatively from rhizomes.

    Resistance Information

    Disease Resistance

Selected primarily for exceptional cold/freeze tolerance rather than disease resistance; proven persistent over many years near 34 degrees N latitude in north-central Texas.
