ICP 9145
Pigeon pea(Cajanus cajan)
Visual Characteristics
Compact, indeterminate, tall plants (~215 cm) with green stems and large, broad, thick, dark-green leaves; duration roughly one month shorter than traditional Malawian long-duration landraces.
Growing Tips
Its relatively short duration lets it escape terminal drought when sown late, which is especially valuable in drier areas; a good fit for Malawi and similar Eastern/Southern African conditions.
Resistance Information
Disease Resistance
Resistant to Fusarium wilt at Katumani (Kenya), ICRISAT-Patancheru (India), and in Malawi, though it can be susceptible to certain Fusarium udum isolates from other regions, so resistance is not universal across all pathogen strains.
