Tonic (Ceres Tonic)

    Plantain(Plantago)

    Flavor Profile

Highly palatable, mineral-rich forage readily selected by grazing livestock; bitter secondary compounds (aucubin, acteoside) give it a herbal, medicinal character.

    Visual Characteristics

Erect growth habit with very large lance-shaped leaves (roughly 25-30 cm long) and prominent ribbed veins; more upright than the prostrate wild ribwort biotypes, forming a productive leafy rosette.

    Growing Tips

Rapid to establish on a wide range of soils; used as a special-purpose forage or in pasture mixes for dairy and sheep to improve summer growth and reduce urinary nitrogen leaching. Manage grazing by leaf length rather than height.

    Resistance Information

    Disease Resistance

Tolerant of many common pasture diseases and pests, and notably tolerant of drought and heat compared with perennial ryegrass.
