Wonderful is by far the most widely grown pomegranate in the world and the standard commercial variety across California, where it accounts for the vast majority of production. It originated from a cutting collected in Florida around 1896 and was introduced commercially in California in 1911. The large fruit ripens in mid to late season and stores exceptionally well, which is why it dominates the fresh market and the juice industry, including POM Wonderful. Trees are vigorous, productive, and moderately cold hardy for a pomegranate. The deep crimson arils are prized for both eating out of hand and juicing, and the variety has become synonymous with pomegranate flavor for most consumers in Western markets.
