Smyrna is a Turkish quince cultivar named for the region around Izmir (historically Smyrna) and widely grown for its very large, fragrant fruit. It produces some of the biggest quinces available, with pale lemon-yellow skin and an intensely aromatic character that perfumes a whole room. The flesh is firm and cooks to a lovely color, making it excellent for preserves, jellies, and baking. Trees are vigorous and productive, with attractive foliage and large leaves. Smyrna is prized both as a productive fruiting variety and as an ornamental, and its size and strong fragrance make it a standout in the home orchard.
