Black Beauty is a classic open-pollinated summer squash and one of the most widely grown green zucchinis, introduced in the 1920s. It produces bushy, compact plants that bear heavy crops of straight, slightly ridged fruits with glossy dark green, almost black, skin. The fruits are best harvested young at six to eight inches, when the flesh is tender, creamy, and mild. Highly productive over a long season, a few plants can supply a household. Maturing in about 50 days, it is an early and dependable producer for home gardens. As an open-pollinated heirloom, its seed can be saved. Black Beauty remains a benchmark zucchini for its rich color, tender flesh, and reliable, abundant yields, and it is one of the varieties most often recommended for first-time squash growers.
