Tropic Sun

    Sunn hemp(Crotalaria juncea)

A US-released sunn hemp cultivar, jointly released in 1983 by the University of Hawaii (CTAHR) and the USDA Soil Conservation Service (now NRCS) as a green manure and forage type. It is notable for being non-toxic to poultry and livestock in feeding trials, unlike toxic strains of Crotalaria juncea and other Crotalaria species.

    Visual Characteristics

Erect, fast-growing annual reaching 4-6 ft (up to ~1.8 m), attaining much of that height within 60 days under favorable conditions, with yellow flowers.

    Growing Tips

A short-day cultivar that flowers and sets seed poorly at higher latitudes, so reliable seed production is largely limited to tropical/subtropical zones; grows rapidly and is used to add nitrogen, suppress weeds, and reduce nematodes.

    Resistance Information

    Disease Resistance

Resistant to root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.); used in crop rotation for nematode suppression.
