Brandywine is a large pink beefsteak heirloom tomato dating to the late 19th century and long associated with Amish growers of the eastern United States. The most common strain, Brandywine Sudduth, bears potato-leaf foliage and fruit that regularly reaches one pound or more. Prized for its full, old-fashioned taste, it is one of the most famous heirloom tomatoes in the world and a frequent winner of flavor tastings. The indeterminate vines are notably vigorous but relatively low-yielding, producing a modest number of very large fruit over a long season. Brandywine is a classic slicing tomato best eaten fresh, and it remains a benchmark against which other heirlooms are judged.
