    Hartley

    Walnut(Juglans regia)

    Large

Hartley is a long-established California English walnut cultivar that was for decades a leading commercial variety, especially valued for the in-shell market. It produces large, attractive, well-sealed nuts with smooth, light shells and light-colored kernels of high quality, making them popular for gift packs and whole-nut sales. Hartley is terminal-bearing and mid-season, leafing out later than early types, which gives it moderate protection from frost and blight. It requires a pollinizer and performs best in warm-summer walnut regions. Though partly superseded by heavier-yielding lateral-bearing cultivars like Chandler, Hartley remains respected for its excellent nut appearance and eating quality and is still grown in home orchards and permaculture plantings valuing showy, high-grade nuts.
