Yarrow(Achillea millefolium)
A widely grown, spreading, mat-forming yarrow noted for dusty brick-red flowers with small yellow centers that fade to light pink and creamy yellow as they age. Valued for its long summer display, drought tolerance and value to pollinators.
Flavor Profile
Deeply dissected foliage is aromatic with a strong, somewhat spicy scent when handled, and the aroma persists in dried arrangements.
Visual Characteristics
Fern-like, aromatic medium-green foliage; dense flattened compound corymbs (to 2-3 in / 5-7.5 cm across) of red flowers aging to pink and yellow. Grows about 1.5-2 ft (45-60 cm) tall and wide.
Growing Tips
Plant in full sun in lean, dry to medium, well-drained soil; avoid rich or heavy clay soil which promotes floppy growth. Deadhead to extend bloom and cut back mid-season to tidy the tangled mat. Drought-tolerant and deer-resistant.
Resistance Information
Disease Resistance
Susceptible to stem rot, powdery mildew and rust; weak stems can lodge and sprawl by late summer without support or pruning.
