Red Velvet
Yarrow(Achillea millefolium)
A vigorous, mat-forming yarrow bearing flat heads of many small rose-red flowers that hold their color better than many older red cultivars. Awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit (2014) and recognized as a Plant for Pollinators.
Flavor Profile
Finely divided foliage carries the typical aromatic, herbaceous yarrow scent.
Visual Characteristics
Finely divided green (slightly glaucous-tinted) leaves on leafy stems; flat flower heads about 10 cm across of deep rose-red florets. Reaches roughly 60 cm tall.
Growing Tips
Grow in full sun in well-drained soil (tolerates chalk, loam and sand). Hardy and drought-tolerant once established; add grit to improve drainage in wet-winter sites; deadhead to encourage repeat flowering.
Resistance Information
Disease Resistance
Generally robust and vigorous; like the species it can suffer powdery mildew and rust in humid conditions and rot in very wet winters, but is considered a strong garden performer noted for color-fade resistance.
