Corn stalks give pole beans a living trellis, and the stacked Three Sisters canopy yields more combined food per bed than a bean monoculture; beans fix their own nitrogen, so they draw little soil N from the heavy-feeding corn.
Layout: Sow corn first; add pole beans at the base once stalks are 6-12 in / knee-high and strong enough to bear climbing vines.
Broad squash leaves blanket the soil as a living mulch, shading out weeds and slowing evaporation around bean and corn roots; the prickly sprawling vines also discourage some browsing animals.
Layout: Plant squash last, about a week after the beans, in the same hills so it fills the ground layer once corn and beans are up.
Living T. patula roots release alpha-terthienyl, a nematicide that inhibits root-knot nematode egg hatch, but only when grown as a dense season-long stand in the bed, not as a few interplanted flowers.

Plants to avoid near Beans
Traditional lore holds interplanted alliums stunt beans and peas; the claim is widely repeated by garden guides but is not confirmed by controlled research, and the supposed disruption of Rhizobium N-fixation is unproven. Separate them as a precaution.
Fennel is allelopathic: its roots and foliage release anethole and related terpenes that inhibit seed germination and growth of many crops, beans included. Isolate it in a container or a far corner of the garden.
Old companion lore holds that pole beans and beets mutually stunt one another (bush beans usually coexist fine). No clear mechanism has been documented, so treat this as weakly supported and separate them if space allows.
