Best companions for Watermelon
Each pairing below earns its place — the reason, when to plant it, and where it sits in the bed.
High cucurbitacin makes it far more attractive to striped/spotted cucumber beetles and squash bugs than watermelon; a perimeter trap concentrates these beetles (which vector bacterial wilt) where they can be sprayed, sparing the melons.
Layout: Start Blue Hubbard transplants ~2 weeks before the watermelon so it is larger and more attractive; set 6-8 plants at field corners/perimeter, 3-8 ft out from the melon block, and treat/destroy beetles on it.
Rhizobial N-fixation raised total soil N, available P and organic carbon in melon/cowpea intercrops and lifted melon yields in field trials; its low canopy also adds arthropod diversity (more predators) around the vines.
Layout: Sow cowpea in rows or as a low intercrop alongside the watermelon hills so they share the bed all season; keep it trimmed back from shading young melon vines.
Open, shallow flowers feed hoverflies (their larvae eat aphids), parasitic wasps, lady beetles and soldier beetles; in melon trials a buckwheat border with radish rows reduced cucumber-beetle numbers and increased yield.
Layout: Sow as border/insectary strips a few weeks before or alongside the watermelon (buckwheat blooms in ~4-6 weeks); resow every 2-3 weeks to keep flowers open through pest season.
Long bloom and tiny accessible flowers strongly aggregate adult hoverflies, whose larvae each eat hundreds of aphids; documented aphid suppression when intercropped in lettuce and orchards. The low mat also shades soil.
Layout: Tuck low alyssum between melon hills or along bed edges at planting; it blooms for months so hoverflies stay resident all season.
Umbel flowers provide shallow, exposed nectar for parasitic wasps (braconids, ichneumonids) and hoverflies whose larvae prey on aphids and caterpillars; a classic insectary umbellifer that boosts natural-enemy numbers.
Layout: Let a few dill plants flower near the melon patch and allow succession/self-sowing so open umbels are present during the aphid/caterpillar window.
Prolific nectar/pollen strongly draws honeybees and native bees; watermelon is pollination-limited (a female flower needs 8+ bee visits for full set), so nearby borage can lift pollinator traffic. Also draws hoverflies and braconid wasps.
Layout: Plant borage at bed edges so it is blooming when female watermelon flowers open in the morning (when stigmas are most receptive); keep it from crowding the hills.
A dense preceding stand of Tagetes (e.g. 'Single Gold') suppresses root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne) via the nematicidal thiophene alpha-terthienyl and by being a poor/dead-end host, cutting root galling on the watermelon that follows.
Layout: Grow a solid marigold stand for 2-4 months in the block the season before watermelon, then plant melons into it. NOTE: a few interplanted marigolds do NOT control nematodes; it takes a dense preceding cover.
Matures in ~30 days, using the open ground before watermelon vines run so bed space is not wasted; in preliminary melon trials radish rows (with a buckwheat border) also reduced cucumber- and flea-beetle densities.
Layout: Sow radish among/between the hills at melon planting and pull it in ~4 weeks, well before the vines spread to fill that space.
Traditionally interplanted with cucurbits as a sacrificial aphid decoy and living ground cover; its trailing habit shades soil at the margins. Controlled evidence for pest deterrence on watermelon is limited and mixed.
Layout: Plant nasturtium at the edges of the melon patch at the same time and let it trail as a sacrificial aphid decoy.

Plants to avoid near Watermelon
Shares family pests and diseases: cucumber beetles (which vector bacterial wilt), squash bugs, powdery/downy mildew and anthracnose. Grouping cucurbits concentrates pest and disease pressure on the melons (unlike a Blue Hubbard trap sited well away).
A heavy feeder competing for potassium, phosphorus and water that can build aphids near the vines. The common claim that potato late blight spreads to watermelon is a myth: that pathogen (Phytophthora infestans) does not infect cucurbits.
Fennel roots and residue release allelochemicals (anethole) that inhibit seed germination and root growth of many neighboring vegetables; best sited well away. Watermelon-specific data are limited but the allelopathy mechanism is documented.
