Imperator 58 is a long, slender carrot introduced in the 1930s and an All-America Selections winner that helped define the classic long supermarket carrot shape. It produces smooth, tapered roots eight to nine inches or more in length with a small core and rich orange color. Imperator types are the standard for fresh-market carrots because of their long, straight, attractive form and sweet flavor. To grow well, they require deep, loose, sandy or well-worked soil free of stones so the long roots can develop straight and unforked. Given the right conditions, Imperator 58 yields tender, sweet carrots ideal for fresh eating. It remains a widely grown open-pollinated standard for gardeners with deep, light soils who want long, classic carrots.
