Cassava(Manihot esculenta)
A landmark high-yielding cassava cultivar developed and released by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in Ibadan, Nigeria, valued as a major source of cassava mosaic disease resistance in African breeding programs. Known locally in Nigeria as Idi-Oshe (registered as NICASS 1).
Visual Characteristics
Plants branch at roughly one meter in height and bear red petioles; storage roots are white-fleshed when freshly peeled.
Growing Tips
A high-yielding variety historically reported to out-yield local landraces by around 40 percent even without fertilizer, with reported yields on the order of 18-35 tons per hectare depending on conditions.
Resistance Information
Disease Resistance
CMD1-type resistance to cassava mosaic disease, introgressed from the wild relative Manihot glaziovii (polygenic, recessive). Reported to also show moderate resistance to cassava bacterial blight and tolerance of other stresses.
