Cassava Variegata

    Cassava(Manihot esculenta)

An ornamental cultivar of cassava grown for its striking variegated foliage rather than for tuber production. It is a widely available named ornamental form of the species in the tropical-plant nursery trade.

    Visual Characteristics

Green palmate leaves (3-7 lobes) variegated along the midrib and veins with yellow, the yellow fading to creamy white as leaves mature; small greenish-white flowers borne in short terminal panicles seasonally through the year. Grows 6-10 feet tall with a similar spread.

    Growing Tips

Grows in USDA Zones 10-12 in evenly moist, fertile, sandy, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Not reliably frost hardy; in Zones 8-9 it dies back at first frost but may regrow in spring, and in cooler zones it is grown as an annual or in containers moved indoors for winter. Tolerant of deer and rabbits.
