California Early is a softneck artichoke-type garlic and one of the two dominant commercial garlics grown in California, forming much of the standard grocery-store supply. As a softneck it is well adapted to mild-winter climates and warmer regions where hardnecks struggle. It produces medium to large white bulbs with numerous cloves in overlapping layers and offers milder flavor than California Late. Being a softneck, it stores well and can be braided. California Early matures somewhat sooner than California Late and is productive and dependable, making it a popular choice for gardeners in warm and temperate zones. Its adaptability, good yields, and reliable performance in milder climates have made it a workhorse variety for home and market growers alike.
